Your plan in plain words

You are 35 and save CHF 3’000 a month on top of CHF 20’000 already set aside. With these numbers you could stop needing a salary at 47, around February 2038. For about 18 years you live on accessible savings, starting with about CHF 560’352, until the pension fund, 3a and AHV are all paying. From 65, AHV pays about CHF 2’730 a month, 68% of your spending. The pension fund was taken as a lump sum and sits in your accessible savings. At 95 you would still have about CHF 803’923 in accessible savings. Assumes stocks at 8.0% before inflation and a 4.0% withdrawal rate. Taxes are estimates for your canton.

How this calculator works

The calculator runs your plan month by month, from today to age 95, in today’s francs.

  1. While you work, your monthly saving goes into your investments and Pillar 3a, and your pension fund grows with the credits on your certificate. From 45 and 55 the legal minimum credits rise, and the calculator follows that unless you switch it off.
  2. The day you stop, you live on accessible savings. The calculator adds AHV contributions for non-employed people and the wealth and income tax of your canton.
  3. Pillar 3a and the pension fund become available on their legal dates, five years before the AHV reference age at the earliest if you left work early. A lump sum is taxed once; a pension-fund pension is paid monthly for life.
  4. AHV starts at 65 by default. It is estimated from your average income and contribution years with the official formula, including the 13th pension paid from December 2026.

Independence is the first month in which two things hold: your accessible money never runs out before the pensions start, and once they all run, what is left can carry the rest of your spending at your withdrawal rate. The calculator searches every month and reports the earliest.

Context

How markets did in the last 20 years

Real index returns, before inflation and fund costs. Our default for stocks is 8.0% a year; the last two decades were stronger, and they included a 67 % fall in francs.

  • Why francs earned less: the franc rose against the dollar, so a Swiss investor kept less of the US gains.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result a promise?

No. It is an estimate based on the numbers you enter and on assumptions about returns, inflation and Swiss rules. Markets go up and down, rules change, and life does too. Use the result to compare choices, not as a guarantee.

Why does the calculator need two numbers, ’needed on the day’ and ’simple rule’?

The simple rule divides your yearly spending by the withdrawal rate, as if you had no pensions. In Switzerland AHV and the pension fund start later and carry part of your spending. You only need enough accessible money to bridge the years until then, plus a smaller pot for the gap that remains. That is the ’needed on the day’ figure.

Can I use my pension fund money before 65?

Plan rules may allow early retirement from 58 if you are still insured there. If you leave work earlier, the money moves to a vested-benefits account, which you can draw from five years before the AHV reference age. Pillar 3a follows the same five-year rule. The calculator applies these dates automatically.

Do I still pay AHV after I stop working?

Yes. Until the reference age you pay contributions as a non-employed person, based on your wealth and pension income. The calculator adds them from the official 2026 table. Pension-fund and 3a balances do not count as wealth until they are paid out.

What withdrawal rate should I use?

4 % is the classic rule and our default. A longer retirement, for example 45 years or more, is safer at 3 to 3.5 %. You can enter up to 7 %; above 4.5 % the risk of running out rises quickly, and the calculator tells you so.

Why are returns entered before inflation?

Because that is how returns are usually quoted. The calculator subtracts the inflation assumption and shows every amount in today’s francs, so CHF 4’000 in thirty years buys what CHF 4’000 buys today.

Are taxes included?

Yes, for the canton you choose: wealth tax, income tax on pensions and a taxable yield on savings, and the tax on lump sums, from 2026 figures of the Federal Tax Administration for the cantonal capital. Income tax while you work is assumed to be paid out of your net income. Check the latest rules with your canton.

Where are my numbers stored?

Only in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. A share link contains your inputs in the address, so share it only with people you trust.
