Your result, explained

On CHF 120’000 / year, the payslip shows about CHF 8’972 per salary. After an estimated income tax of CHF 7’927 / year (6.6% of gross), about CHF 8’312 / month is left to live on and save.

Swiss citizens and C-permit holders pay income tax themselves, in instalments or with the yearly bill, so it does not appear on the payslip. With a B permit it is usually deducted at source.

An estimate: your pension fund may deduct more than the legal minimum, accident and sickness insurance differ by employer, and deductions such as 3a, commuting or childcare lower the tax.

How it is calculated

  • AHV/IV/EO: the employee share on the whole salary.
  • Unemployment insurance (ALV): the employee share on the salary up to the maximum insured salary; nothing above it.
  • Accident insurance (NBU): an estimate; the real rate depends on your employer’s insurer.
  • Pension fund: half of the legal minimum savings credit for your age, on the insured salary. Risk premiums and plans above the minimum are not included.
  • Income tax: federal, cantonal and communal tax in the cantonal capital for tax year 2026, without church tax, from the Federal Tax Administration’s tax calculator, which applies the standard deductions for employees.
  • Left per month = gross − contributions − tax, divided by 12.

The rates are listed on the methodology page. Use the result as your income in the calculator or the savings rate tool.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real payslip different?

Pension funds often deduct more than the legal minimum, accident and sickness insurance differ by employer, and some employers pay part of your share. Your payslip is the reference.

Is income tax deducted from my salary?

For Swiss citizens and C-permit holders, no: you pay it yourself in instalments or with the yearly bill. With a B permit it is usually deducted at source.

How can I lower the tax?

Pay into Pillar 3a, buy into the pension fund, and claim the deductions your canton allows (commuting, childcare, further training). The [Pillar 3a tool](route:tool.pillar3a) shows the effect.
